Its production began in the late 1950s, around the time the steel Datejust was introduced.
The date model was once offered in a choice of3 metals: steel, 18K yellow & steel, and all 18k yellow gold.

Rolex Date watches are a slightly smaller (34mm) unisex version of the Datejust 36mm. 
It is appropriate for a man with a slightly smaller wrist or a woman who wants to make a fashion statement.
The Rolex Date watch has a 3135 caliber 31 jewel COSC certified chronometer automatic movement (similar to the Datejust 36mm) that maintains accurate time within a tolerance of three seconds per day. 
It also has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and screw-down winding crown
Dials are offered in a variety of options & colors - the same with hour markers.
